Cameroonian Runner to Donate Guinness World Record Outfit to National Museum
Cameroon’s Toghu Marathoner, Afowiri Kizito Fondzenyuy, will on Wednesday hand over the traditional outfit he wore while setting a Guinness World Record to the National Museum in Yaoundé.
The outfit — a Toghu top, traditional cap, and a pair of running shoes — was worn by Fondzenyuy during the Tokyo Marathon in March 2024. He completed the race in 4 hours, 24 minutes, and 2 seconds, making him the fastest person in the world to run a marathon in full traditional attire.
The donation ceremony is expected to be attended by guests from government institutions, cultural organisations, and civil society.
Fondzenyuy has worn the Toghu outfit at several other international marathons, using each race as a platform to promote Cameroonian culture and raise awareness about autism and inclusive education.
“This outfit has taken Cameroonian identity to six continents,” he said ahead of the event. “Now it will serve as a reminder to future generations that we can carry our culture with pride, even on the world stage.”
Beyond his running achievements, Fondzenyuy has used his platform to support development initiatives across Cameroon. Through his Amom Foundation, he has helped implement projects including the construction of two concrete school-access bridges in the North West Region, distribution of school materials, and the introduction of entrepreneurship training in schools.
The foundation is also developing a school dedicated to children with special needs and autism.
During the event, Fondzenyuy is also expected to propose the launch of a Yaoundé Culture Marathon — a new national race designed to combine athletics, music, traditional dress, and cultural celebration.
The National Museum will keep the donated items as part of its permanent collection, marking a rare intersection of Cameroonian heritage and global athletic history.
